NewsNetball Fiji embarks on Governance Revamp

July 27, 2025by Mitieli Baleiwai

Netball Fiji has launched a major governance reform project aimed at reviewing and rewriting its constitution to ensure it remains relevant and responsive to the current and future needs of the sport. The initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening the organisation’s foundations and enhancing its long-term effectiveness.

The governance framework revamp has been a key priority on the roadmap of the current Netball Fiji Executive Board since taking office. The project has now gained momentum following the successful awarding of a grant from World Netball’s Strategic Development Fund, one of only five such grants awarded globally in 2024. The grant supports constitutional review and reform to enable improved governance across national federations.

As the first step in the reform process, Netball Fiji engaged the Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC) – the statutory body for sport in Fiji as a key partner and brought on board former Netball Fiji CEO Vivian Koster as the project consultant. The process officially began with an orientation meeting held on Saturday, 19 July, at the FNSC Board Room in Suva.

All presidents of Netball Fiji member associations were invited to the orientation, irrespective of recent internal disagreements, with the understanding that the review is designed to benefit the entire netball community.

At the meeting, the Netball Fiji Constitutional Review Working Group was established. The group includes representatives from member associations in Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Tailevu, Nadroga, Bua, and Fiji Secondary Schools as well as members of the Netball Fiji Executive Committee. Mr. Peter Mazey, CEO of the Fiji National Sports Commission, has been appointed as an independent advisor to the group.

Netball Fiji President RubyAnn Sorovaki emphasised the importance of the project: “This project is vital for the way forward and reflects Netball Fiji’s commitment to having stronger structures in place that support the sport across all levels today and in the future.”

As part of the process, all Netball Fiji member associations have been invited to make formal submissions to the Working Group. These will be reviewed as part of an inclusive and transparent approach to constitutional reform.

This governance project is expected to lay the foundation for a more unified and resilient Netball Fiji that will be well-positioned to support growth, participation, and high performance across the country.
