NewsCoach development program to help local coaches boost grassroots competition

Netball Fiji in partnership with Netball Australia organised a coaching development program where a total of 17 local coaches attended from 11th – 13th September at the Vodafone Arena.

The coaches had the opportunity to take part in the foundation coaching course which is a requirement for foundation coach accreditation, participants also attained their foundation coach accreditation undergo two days of coaching course where they got their development coach accreditation.

Sulueti Veiba, who coaches the Savusavu Netball team that competed at the Digicel Punjas National Championship, emphasized the significance of such initiatives for nurturing netball talent from the grassroots level. Club coaches learn the fundamentals and coaching knowledge through programs like this.

“The coaching clinic organised by Netball Fiji will help our local coaches develop their teams across the country, everything we learn here we will take it back to our associations and help prepare our team to compete at their best,” said Veiba.

She also noted that one of the primary objectives of the program is for these coaches to return to their associations and elevate the caliber of their clubs, enhancing their competitiveness.

“We have really develop our knowledge on coaching, Its crucial how we as coach communicate with our plays and to get them to do the game plan we want them to do, I believe this coaching clinic helps a lot in these areas.”

Karen Topp, coaching facilitator from Netball Australia, led the program. She expressed the aim of extending and enhancing the skills these coaches have acquired, making them better coaches in their clubs and associations.

“All of their work as coaches will to contribute to the skill levels of players in Fiji continuing to grow, and to be competitive not only in Fiji but also at the world stage.”

“These coaches will be able to grow their own capabilities and capacity, to encourage and provide opportunities to those girls in their communities to come back and compete at a higher stage.”

Veiba stressed her commitment to taking everything she learned at the development coaching clinic and using it to further develop her Savusavu team.

“I’m confident that all of us coaches in this workshop will return to our associations and continue to elevate our teams to compete at a higher level.”
