The Men’s Netball Championship is set to begin from the 19th to 20th of this month at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
This is the second year of the championship, which was started by Netball Fiji last year to provide a platform for the growing interest in men’s netball.
The increasing popularity of men’s netball in Fiji has led to an increase in the number of teams participating in this year’s championship. A total of 16 team’s will be competing, compared to eight teams last year. The team’s are distributed among the major netball districts. Suva won the inaugural Men’s Championship after beating Nadi in the final 30 – 21.
Netball Fiji continues to promote men’s netball and has also added a Men’s grade to the Punjas Digicel National Championship.
Netball Fiji’s Development Manager Mr. Sandeep Prasad said that the main aim of men’s netball right now is to provide as many opportunities as possible for male players to showcase and grow their talent.
“This is to give men’s netballers the opportunity to showcase their talents, we have changed the teams from being district teams to club teams and doubled the participation number.”
Prasad also mentioned that Netball Fiji has appointed an official management team to run and manage the Fiji Men’s team, who have been helping to prepare the Fiji Pearls.
“We are continuously seeking opportunities for the Fiji National Men’s Team to play in international test matches and will be submitting a bid for the Fiji Men’s Fast Five team to be included in this year’s Fast Five tournament to be held in New Zealand.”
The Men’s championship will begin on the 19th, and the finals are scheduled for the 20th around 5.00pm at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. Tickets are $5 for adults.
