The Fiji Pearls are deep into their preparations after the final twelve players were selected for the 17th Pacific Games, scheduled to take place in the Solomon Islands from November 19th to December 2nd.
The 12 member team had their first run on session last weekend at the National Netball centre.
A 24-member extended squad was chosen following the 2023 Digicel Punjas National Championship. The extended squad was then split into two teams to compete in the FijiAus Quad Series, where the Netball Fiji selectors were able to identify the final twelve players for the Pacific Games.
Head coach Una Rokoura emphasized the importance of these events as a perfect platform to assess her players.
Rokoura explained that it allowed them to thoroughly examined all aspects of the game, assessed individual players, and addressed the specific needs of each sub-group.
“This allowed us to split the extended squad we select from the National Champ, put them into two teams in the Quad Series, we looked at all areas of the game, individual players and the need in each sub group,” said Rokoura.
Rokoura expressed her confidence in the team’s selection, highlighting the significance of having a blend of experienced players and emerging talents.
“The mixture of senior players and these young talents is crucial for the team. Having this blend brings a different style of play, maturity on the court, and a sense of control to our game,” said Rokoura.
With only four weeks left for preparation before their departure for Honiara, Rokoura is determined to fine-tune all aspects of their game.
“We’ve got four weeks to prepare thoroughly before we leave for the Pacific Games. Additionally, we will engage in a team bonding activity. Team culture, bonding, revisiting our team values, and our goals for the Pacific Games are all essential aspects of our preparation.”
