The Netball World Cup is a quadrennial international netball world championship coordinated by the World Netball, it inaugurated in 1963. Since its inception the competition has been dominated primarily by the Australian national netball team (the Diamonds) and the New Zealand national netball team (the Silver Ferns), as of the 2019 event having both medaled in every one of the 15 championships – Trinidad and Tobago is the only other team to have won a title (a three-way tie in the 1979 championship). The most recent tournament was the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, which was won by New Zealand.
Fiji has competed at 9 Netball World Cups, making its debut at the 1975 World Championship. Since 1987 Fiji has only missed the 1995 games held in Birmingham England.
Fiji’s best finish at the Netball World Cup has been 6th, where the team lost to South Africa 57-49 in the 5th place play off at the 1999 World Championship in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Fiji took part in the last World Cup, held in 2019 in Liverpool England, where we finished in 14th place, after losing to Samoa in the playoff for the 13th place by 11 goals 53-42. Our match results from the 2019 World Cup:
The 2023 world cup will be the sixteenth staging of the premier competition. The tournament will be held from 28th July to 6th August at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa. This will mark the first time the tournament will be held in Africa. Fiji will aim to qualify for this tournament by taking part in the Netball World Cup 2023 Oceania Qualifiers with the details of the qualifying tournament to be announced.
