Kalesi Tawake is set to make her debut at the Netball World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa this month.
The 22 year old hails from Mualevu, Vanuabalavu in Lau, with maternal links to Nukuloa, Gau Lomaiviti.
The Mualevu lass is a third year marine science student at USP and is playing for the Lomaiviti netball club in the Suva Netball club competition. Kalesi firmly believes that the environment athletes surround themselves with play a crucial role in nurturing and developing their skills to achieve the ultimate goal.
Kalesi explained that regular club competition will help to build up a player, she knows that young girls can excel in their netball aspirations if they possess the right attitude and engage with their local clubs that will help in development from a young age. She believes that while talent is important, it is the right mindset and the support of the right individuals that truly lead to success.
“Anyone can have the talent to play but if you have the right attitude to keep pushing and surrounded by the right people you’ll excel in whatever environment you’re in.”
Expressing her gratitude, Kalesi acknowledges her older sister for introducing her to netball at a young age and continually pushing her to reach her limits, she added that her sisters support and encouragement have played a significant role in her journey.
”I thank my sister for getting me into my netball journey, she introduced to the game at a young age and continues to motivate me, my family has always been there for me, and the support is something i’m most thankful for.”
Kalesii is excited to appear in her first world cup when she takes the court in Cape Town, she added that this is the pinnacle of her netball career, knowing how far she has come since her early days in the sport.
With determination, Kalesi is committed to giving her all on the court, knowing that this is a significant milestone in her netball journey.
